When it comes to your non-negotiables, just remember that they serve to shut down your options—which is usually a good thing, but not always.

A neighbor approached me a few days ago looking for some guidance on his freelance journalism business.

The conversation was flowing along until he said “but I don’t want to learn anything new”.

Not exactly someone who has a prayer of building any more authority than he’s already managed.

It was also the end of the conversation—pretty tough to help someone who’s decided they don’t want to change.
