How To Eliminate Unnecessary Distractions From Your 10.0 Self

There was a home cook who always cut both ends off a roast before sticking it in the oven. When their kid asked why they did that, they replied: “I don’t know actually, my mom used to do that.”

They called their mom and asked if she knew why—and she said “No, I did it because that’s how my mom made a roast. But now you’ve got me wondering so I’m gonna find out.”

Sure enough, when she reached her mother, the mystery was solved: “We only had one roasting pan and it was always too short so I cut the ends off the roast so it would fit.”

We do things—sometimes quite unnecessary things—for reasons we don’t always understand.

At one point, cutting the ends off a roast made sense. But not anymore. Now it’s a wasteful distraction.

It’s the same as you transition your life and your business toward your 10.0 self—the future self that calls to you as you make choices and trade-offs today.

One way to get ruthless about cutting unnecessary distractions that your future self will thank you for, is to run every single action you take through the 10.0 filter.

Would your 10.0 self:

Keep doing mindless repetitive tasks or decide what’s essential and hire out/buy some tech for them?

Say yes to a non-ideal client?

Start a service line that doesn’t maximize your personal genius?

Accept that meeting request with someone who is clearly trying to sell you something you don’t want?

Spend time with people who bore, ignore or irritate you?

Appear on a podcast that isn’t aligned with your message or your ideal audience?

Agree to speak (or travel or work) for a fee or an audience that doesn’t make your toes curl with delight?

Carve out the free time and space to rejuvenate regularly?

The start of a new year is an engraved invitation to make changes that stick. That position you ever more closely to the entrepreneur and person you want to be.
