The Man In The Mirror

When you look in the mirror, do you see who’s really there? Or a carefully sculpted, much improved version?

Aspiration—wanting to be better—is good when paired with action. It’s like going to the gym—every day you work at it until you get the results you want.

But delusion? Not good. Calling yourself a lion when you’re really a pussycat confuses your audience. It’s a lie. It plants seeds of doubt that work as a client (and referral) repellant.

Think of it as truth in advertising. High touch wealth advisor means personal, pro-active and remembering important details. Bet-the-business attorney means consistently whip-smart, business-focused and on time.

Match your promise (your brand) to what’s in the mirror.

  • Right off the bat, even before reading, I immediately thought of Dan Fogelberg’s tune of the same name. Here goes the lyrics:

    The man in the mirror
    He keeps getting nearer
    But I am not moving
    The man in the backstreet
    Is holding a trackmeet
    But I will not run.

    Someplace inside you a
    Seed has been born
You’ve got to watch it grow
    Someplace inside you
A river is waiting to flow
    Will you let it go?

    Those voices you’re hearing
    Are never worth fearing
    They’re only inside you
They’ll tempt you and taunt you
They’ll help you and haunt you
    But don’t try to hide.

    Sometimes the sun will be
    Right at your shoulder
    Helping you keep your stride
Sometimes you might have to give up
    A piece of your pride
    Have you even tried?

    The man in the mirror
    He keeps getting nearer
    But I am not moving
    The man in the backstreet
    Is holding a trackmeet
    But I will not run.

    Someplace inside you a
    Seed has been born
You’ve got to watch it grow
    Someplace inside you
A river is waiting to flow
    Will you let it go?

Truth in advertising, describing what one really offers often become a key factor in how client like how they see you deliver and their comfort in coming back to you.

  • Dan Fogelberg, Michael Jackson–two of the greats took this one on. Thanks for sharing Corey!

  • I often see the lady in the mirror in reverse. She seems smaller and more timid than the lion roaring inside. I often have to reflect off other professionals in the industry to pinpoint the real me. I guage what I can promise by knowing my skill set in reference to those in the industry. And then to really bring out my true image, I also have to define what I can’t deliver. It’s difficult to see the real me as I work at building my brand…TBD.
