The Gift Of Grace

Christmas. Hanukkah. Kwanzaa.

No matter the religion or culture, many of us celebrate with gift giving in December.

This year, the gift I most want to give (and receive) is the gift of grace.

The dictionary defines grace many ways: elegance and beauty of form; a pleasing or attractive quality; favor or goodwill; granting mercy.

Close your eyes just for a moment and conjure up those you know who best embody grace. Don’t you immediately breathe easier or smile a little brighter?

Those with grace are a joy to be around. They may be the quieter ones in the room, but we always seek them out because they make us feel good about ourselves.

Grace can look magical to the uninitiated. Those with grace seem to effortlessly, magnetically pull people into their orbit. The lift they give us is treasured—and remembered, long after more conventional gifts have been forgotten.

As we anticipate new beginnings amidst unspeakable tragedy, I propose we all do our best to bring a little grace to a world that sorely needs it.

Wishing you grace, peace and love until I see you again in 2013*.

*I’ll be back here on January 7
